Legendary F1 designer Adrian Newey shares his vision, challenges, and excitement as he begins a new chapter with the Aston Martin Aramco Formula One Team.

A New Partnership: Leading Aston Martin’s Technical Charge

Adrian Newey, the most successful designer in Formula One history, has officially joined Aston Martin as Managing Technical Partner. In his first interview since taking on this role, Newey opened up about what drew him to the Silverstone-based outfit and what the future holds.

“Lawrence [Stroll] has very kindly trusted me to be his partner, developing the technical side of the team, driving our technical abilities forward and improving our engineering prowess,” Newey explained.

This unique title reflects a broader role than Newey has traditionally held — one that extends beyond design and into the strategic leadership of Aston Martin’s technical direction.

First Impressions: State-of-the-Art Facilities and a Warm Welcome

Newey, who began visiting the team in March 2025, was immediately struck by the atmosphere and infrastructure at the AMR Technology Campus.

“Everyone has been very welcoming, which is great — it hasn’t always been the case when I’ve started with a new team,” he said.

He praised the team’s new facilities, including a cutting-edge wind tunnel and simulator, noting they provide a solid foundation for success. “The facilities are really impressive — and very new, which is nice.”

2026 Regulations: A Designer’s Playground

One of the most exciting challenges ahead is preparing for the sweeping regulation changes coming in 2026 — both on the chassis and power unit sides.

“There’s more scope for innovation with the 2026 regulations than meets the eye,” Newey noted. “And it’s a nice challenge, a clean sheet of paper.”

While these new rules are designed to tighten performance gaps, Newey believes they still leave room for ingenuity — a space where his expertise can thrive.

Working With the Drivers: Harnessing Feedback for Performance

Newey emphasized the importance of collaborating closely with the team’s drivers — Lance Stroll and Fernando Alonso — to translate their feedback into engineering decisions.

“Lance and Fernando, they’re both very different in what they look for from a car,” he observed. “Understanding what they want and how they communicate that is going to be an important part of the journey.”

This two-way relationship between drivers and the technical team is something Newey has always prioritized throughout his illustrious career.

So whilst the 2025 season may not be going to plan for Aston Martin, with Adrian leading the charge for 2026 exciting things are coming for the Silverstone based team and their fans.

Update – October 2025: Aston Martin’s next technical chapter has already begun. Former Ferrari chief Enrico Cardile has now joined the team to lead its design and engineering department. You can read the full story here → Enrico Cardile at Aston Martin: Vision, Speed, and a 2026 Built to Win.
