Marc Marquez scored his 100th Grand Prix victory across all classes at Balaton Park Circuit on Sunday, becoming only the third rider in history to reach the milestone alongside Giacomo Agostini and Valentino Rossi. He did it the hard way. Marquez led from pole, lost the lead to Pedro Acosta on lap two, fought back through a spellbinding duel across laps 14 and 15 to retake it, and then pulled away to win by 1.343 seconds. The race he was not supposed to be competitive in, at a circuit where right-hand corners still test his recovering shoulder. Meanwhile, five riders never made it past the first corner. Jorge Martin’s front end locked under braking at Turn 1 and the consequence wiped out championship leader Marco Bezzecchi, Raul Fernandez, Fermin Aldeguer and Fabio Di Giannantonio. Of that group, only Di Giannantonio restarted. Bezzecchi and Martin were taken to the medical centre. No visible fractures confirmed for either. The championship lead Bezzecchi brought to Hungary remained intact. So did the 20-point gap to Martin.

- Martin handed double Long Lap penalty for next Grand Prix for causing the Turn 1 incident
MotoGP Grand Prix of Hungary 2026 Starts in Chaos
Marquez got the perfect launch from pole and led into Turn 1 cleanly. Behind him, Martin’s front end locked under braking. The Aprilia went wide and the domino effect was immediate. Bezzecchi, the championship leader, was collected first. Fernandez, Aldeguer and Di Giannantonio had nowhere to go. Five riders on the floor before the first lap was complete.
Di Giannantonio got back up and rejoined. The other four were out. Bezzecchi and Martin made their way to the medical centre. No visible fractures for either. Martin was later handed a double Long Lap penalty for his next Grand Prix for causing the incident.
Bagnaia had started fifth and found clear space on the outside of it, emerging P3 behind Marquez and Acosta. The two Aprilia riders who entered Hungary as championship one-two were already out of the race.
Acosta Takes the Lead
Marquez led the opening lap but Acosta attacked at Turn 5 on lap two, forcing his way through to lead at Balaton Park. The KTM man stretched it to over a second by lap six. The medium rear Michelin was slow to come in for Marquez. Acosta was making it count while the window was open.

Bagnaia was a lonely third. Miller led a pack 2.6 seconds adrift of the podium, with Marini, Moreira, Bastianini and Mir running close behind. Bastianini and Mir made contact at the exit of Turn 1 midrace. Mir almost went down twice. Bastianini was issued a Long Lap penalty, feeding him back out in P11. Ogura, who had started tenth, was picking through quietly.
The Battle for 100
The medium rear came alive for Marquez around lap ten and the gap started falling. From 1.6 seconds it came down to 0.7, then 0.3, then 0.2. By lap 13 Acosta could hear him. Lap 14, the fight lit up. Marquez attacked at Turn 9. It stuck through Turn 10. Acosta cut back underneath at Turn 9 to 10 and retook the lead. On the next lap Marquez attacked Turn 15. Acosta covered the outside, made the inside at Turn 16, and blocked it.
Lap 15, Turn 9 again. This time it held. Marquez led and immediately began pulling clear. By lap 20 the gap was 1.6 seconds. On that same lap he posted the fastest lap of the race, a 1:38.313, half a second quicker than Acosta.
“This result doesn’t mean that we’ve suddenly fixed our fitness condition, but simply that we’re at a different track, where there are only three right-hand corners in which you really need to push hard. There’s still some way to go.”
Marc Marquez, Ducati Lenovo Team
Marquez crossed the line 1.343 seconds clear of Acosta. His first win since Misano 2025. His 100th Grand Prix victory across all classes. Ducati’s 100th MotoGP GP win. The weekend triple completed: pole, Sprint, race. He moves to fifth in the championship, 72 points behind Bezzecchi.
Bagnaia and the Closing Laps
Bagnaia held third throughout, his third consecutive podium after Catalunya and Italy. Ogura closed from fourth in the final laps, passing Marini to take P4. He’d come from tenth on the grid. Marini fifth, equal best MotoGP result with Honda, matching Hungary and Indonesia from last year.
Moreira sixth, career best. Lecuona seventh from P16 standing in for the injured Alex Marquez. Miller eighth, first top ten of 2026. Bastianini ninth after two Long Lap penalties. Binder tenth.
“We had the pace to be closer to the front, so it’s a shame about the start. Today’s conditions were quite unique and, if you find yourself behind, it becomes very difficult to overtake.”
Francesco Bagnaia, Ducati Lenovo Team
Quartararo retired after 22 laps. Mir after 14. Crutchlow classified P16, the final finisher. Rins P13, Morbidelli P14, Viñales P15.

Coffee Corner Take
100 wins. The third rider ever. We’ve heard Marquez talk down his chances often enough by now. Balaton Park was supposed to be damage limitation. He left with pole, the Sprint and the Grand Prix.
Acosta was the only rider who got close. The duel across laps 14 and 15 was some of the best racing we’ve seen all season. He blocked the Turn 15 move. Marquez came back to Turn 9 a lap later and that was it. Once the medium rear came into its window, Acosta had no answer. That’s where the gap sits right now between a seven-time world champion and a rider still learning how to win.
Bezzecchi leads by 20 points. Both he and Martin left Hungary with nothing while Ogura scored 13, Bagnaia 16 and Marquez 25. The gap grew at Mugello and survived Hungary. Brno matters more now than it did before lights out on Sunday.
Nobody’s really talking about Bagnaia. Three consecutive podiums (Catalunya, Italy, Hungary) while the title contenders crash into each other. He wasn’t near Marquez and Acosta on Sunday but he’s accumulating. He’s drifted back into this championship and the standings are starting to show it.
Lecuona P7 from P16 standing in for Alex Marquez. Not a result many predicted. Moreira P6, career best. That midfield told a better story than the front end let on.
Martin carries two Long Laps into Brno. Bezzecchi carries the lead and a sore body. Marquez has 100 wins and a shoulder with work still to do. Brno tells us whether Hungary changed anything.
