IndyCar WWTR Qualifying 2026: Alex Palou celebrates pole position for the Bommarito Automotive Group 500 at World Wide Technology Raceway after claiming his fourth consecutive IndyCar pole

Palou Claims Fourth Consecutive IndyCar Pole at WWTR as First Driver to Match Will Power’s 2011 Streak

7 June 2026 · 06:02 BST

IndyCar WWTR Qualifying 2026 ended with Alex Palou going last of 25 drivers at World Wide Technology Raceway and beating the field by more than 1 mph to claim the NTT P1 Award for the Bommarito Automotive Group 500. His two-lap average of 174.353 mph in the No. 10 HRC Chip Ganassi Racing Honda is his fourth consecutive pole position, a streak that has not been matched in IndyCar since Will Power ran four in a row in 2011. It is his 17th career pole and his fifth from nine races this season. David Malukas qualified second for Team Penske at 173.244, while championship rival Kyle Kirkwood secured third after the defending race winner continued his strong form at the Illinois oval. Felix Rosenqvist, the 2026 Indianapolis 500 winner, starts fourth. Palou leads the championship by 62 points over Kirkwood heading into 260 laps on Sunday. The one detail that complicates his weekend: World Wide Technology Raceway is the only oval on the 2026 schedule where Palou has never finished on the podium in his career.

Key Points: IndyCar WWTR Qualifying 2026

  • Palou poles at 174.353 mph, 51.6195s in the No. 10 Chip Ganassi Honda. Fourth consecutive NTT P1 Award. 17th career pole. First driver to win four straight poles since Will Power in 2011
  • Malukas P2 at 173.244 in the No. 12 Team Penske Chevrolet. Strong debut Penske season continues at one of his favourite tracks
  • Kirkwood P3 at 173.206 in the No. 27 Andretti Global Honda. Defending WWTR race winner starts second row. Trails Palou by 62 points in the standings
  • Rosenqvist P4 at 172.953 in the No. 60 Meyer Shank Racing Honda. The 2026 Indianapolis 500 winner lines up on the second row
  • McLaughlin P5 at 172.869 in the No. 3 Team Penske Chevrolet. Throwback livery honouring Helio Castroneves’ 2009 Indy 500 win for the team
  • Newgarden P8 at 172.415. Five career victories at WWTR, more than any other active driver. Starts eighth in the No. 2 Team Penske Chevrolet

How the Session Unfolded

Twenty-five drivers. Single-car runs. Palou drew the last position in the order and used it. By the time he rolled onto the 1.25-mile oval, Malukas had set the pace at 173.244 with the field unable to get close. Palou put down a 25.7195 opening lap and followed it with 25.9000, a two-lap total of 51.6195 seconds and an average of 174.353 mph. More than 1 mph clear of second place. The session was over the moment he crossed the line.

He was second in morning practice and admitted afterwards that he had not expected pole position. The speed was there throughout the day, but the final margin still came as a surprise.

Four Straight. First Time Since Power in 2011.

IMS road course. Indianapolis Motor Speedway oval. Streets of Detroit. World Wide Technology Raceway. One driver on pole at all of them. The streak has not been replicated in IndyCar for fifteen years. Will Power went four consecutive in 2011 and nobody has matched it since. Power is one of the most decorated qualifiers the series has ever produced. Palou has joined a very short list, alongside one of the greatest qualifiers IndyCar has ever seen. The last driver to put together a four-pole streak like this was Will Power in 2011.

This is his 17th career pole and his fifth from nine races in 2026. He went last of 25 and beat the field by more than a mile per hour. Chip Ganassi Racing have built something that is working across every format the calendar throws at them.

WWTR is the circuit that has given him the most trouble across his career. Best finish here is fourth in 2024. No top-three, no win, no podium. The pole changes the picture for Sunday but does not erase that history. He acknowledged it directly. The pace is there. Whether it converts is the question 260 laps will answer.

Malukas and the Championship Picture

David Malukas qualified second at 173.244 in the No. 12 Verizon Team Penske Chevrolet. Strong debut Penske season, one of his favourite tracks, front row alongside the championship leader. Palou is 62 points clear of Kirkwood in the standings. Malukas is further back. A strong result from second on Sunday does not close the gap to Palou directly, but it puts pressure on Kirkwood, who starts third and needs everything to go right if the deficit is not going to stretch further before the halfway point of the season.

Kirkwood, Rosenqvist and the Second Row

Kyle Kirkwood won this race in 2025. He starts third in 2026 at 173.206 in the No. 27 Andretti Global Honda. Defending winner, second row, title rival on pole. He trails Palou by 62 points. Third is not a disaster. It is also not where the team wanted to be on Saturday night.

Felix Rosenqvist lines up fourth at 172.953 in the No. 60 Meyer Shank Racing Honda. The 2026 Indianapolis 500 winner starts the second row of an oval race at Madison, Illinois.

McLaughlin, Armstrong and the Third Row

Scott McLaughlin qualified fifth at 172.869 in the No. 3 DEX Team Penske Chevrolet, the fastest Chevrolet in the session. The car carries a throwback livery this weekend honouring Helio Castroneves’ 2009 Indianapolis 500 victory for the team. McLaughlin starts from the third row alongside Marcus Armstrong, who qualified sixth at 172.483 in the No. 66 Meyer Shank Racing Honda. Two Meyer Shank Racing cars inside the top six gives the team a strong platform heading into Sunday’s 260-lap race.

Newgarden: Five Wins Here, Starts Eighth

Josef Newgarden leads all active drivers with five career victories at World Wide Technology Raceway. He starts eighth on Sunday at 172.415 in the No. 2 Astemo Team Penske Chevrolet. Five wins at a track is the kind of record that does not get built on pace alone. He knows this oval. Starting eighth at a circuit he has won five times is a different kind of problem than starting eighth somewhere else.

Coffee Corner Take

Four consecutive poles. Power has 69 career poles, more than anyone in the history of the series. Palou has joined a very short list. The last driver to put together a four-pole streak like this was Will Power in 2011.

The variety is the thing. Road course, oval, street circuit, oval again. Four completely different disciplines in a single month. Chip Ganassi Racing have found something in this car that is working universally and Palou is extracting it every single time. Five poles from nine races this season. He is not running close to the field. He is ahead of it.

There is one statistic that still hangs over the weekend. WWTR is the only circuit on the 2026 schedule where Palou has never reached the podium. His best finish remains fourth in 2024. He mentioned it himself after qualifying. Pole position changes the conversation, but it does not erase the history. Sunday is when he gets the chance to do that.

Kirkwood starts third. He won this race last year and trails Palou by 62 points. From second row at a track where Palou starts from pole, Sunday needs to go wrong for the leader and right for Kirkwood simultaneously. That is a narrow set of conditions to bank on.

Newgarden starts eighth with five wins at this track. He knows exactly what WWTR demands across a long race distance, and eighth is a starting position he has come back from here before. Do not ignore him.
