F1 Sprint – Qatar GP 2025: Piastri Controls Lusail as Norris Extends His Lead

29 November 2025 · 15:06 GMT

The Qatar GP 2025 Sprint Race hit hard from the moment the lights came on. Oscar Piastri owned the launch, controlled every phase, and turned Lusail into his arena for the third year running. George Russell stayed close but never close enough. Lando Norris absorbed the heat, held Verstappen at arm’s length, and stretched his title lead on a night when the pressure should have tilted the other way.

– Piastri wins the Qatar GP 2025 Sprint Race, his third consecutive Lusail Sprint victory
– Russell finishes second, Norris keeps Verstappen behind for third
– Verstappen slips to fourth as tyre life fades
– Antonelli receives a late five-second penalty and drops behind Tsunoda
– Norris leads the Championship on 396 points, Piastri second on 374, Verstappen third on 371
– If Norris wins the Grand Prix, he becomes World Champion
– Verstappen must finish ahead of Norris tomorrow to stay in the title fight

Formation Lap – Setting the Scene

Lusail under the lights carries its own kind of tension. The grid rolled out on mediums, some fresh, some already marked by mileage. Piastri didn’t flinch. Russell braced for the run to Turn 1. Norris waited with the points in his pocket and the pressure creeping in. Verstappen sat in sixth with no margin left to play with.

Start and Early Phase

Piastri’s launch was clean. Russell moved across to cover Norris, forcing the championship leader out of the optimal line into Turn 1. Alonso hesitated and paid for it. Tsunoda and Verstappen both jumped him, with the Red Bull into fourth before the lap had even settled.

But Verstappen’s early progress stopped there. The order locked. Piastri, Russell, Norris, Verstappen. The DRS zone wasn’t long enough to crack open a fight at the front. Each driver found their rhythm. Piastri anchored the pack.

Middle Phase

Tyres dictated the Sprint. Grip fell away. Drivers skated wide. Lap times changed with the surface. Tsunoda hit track limits repeatedly and earned a penalty that shaped his finish. Alonso’s balance faded. Antonelli cleared him but flirted with the limits himself.

Piastri eased ahead. Russell held the gap but couldn’t threaten. Norris kept Verstappen behind by managing the corners and protecting the fronts. Verstappen stayed close for a few laps before the dirty air took over and the Red Bull faded.

Further back, Sainz nursed a damaged car. Stroll boxed early to avoid breaching tyre-life limits. The midfield scattered as mistakes crept in.

Final Phase

The Sprint settled into its final shape. Piastri stretched clear of Russell. Norris kept Verstappen comfortably at bay. Gasly and Colapinto dipped in for softs to squeeze in qualifying laps. Antonelli avoided a late deletion scare but fell behind Tsunoda once the separate five-second penalty landed.

Nothing unexpected. No late chaos. Just three drivers running their own races into three very different Sundays.

Piastri crossed the line with authority. Russell followed. Norris banked the six points that mattered more than the position itself.

From the Top Three

Championship Picture

The maths shifts again. Norris moves to 396. Piastri climbs to 374. Verstappen drops to 371. The dynamic is clear. If Norris wins the Grand Prix, he becomes World Champion. Verstappen must finish ahead of him to keep the fight alive. Piastri stays in range, but only a decisive Sunday keeps his bid intact.

Rebuild Ahead / Fallout

Parc fermé unlocks. Setups come back into play. McLaren know the balance still needs shaping for qualifying. Red Bull search for a way to keep Verstappen alive in dirty air. Williams inspect the damage on Sainz’s car. Antonelli and Tsunoda switch places in the final order once the penalties settle.

Coffee Corner Take – Qatar GP 2025 Sprint Race

This was the reset Oscar Piastri needed. Weeks of frustration. Missed chances. A title bid that drifted off course. Lusail gave him a clean slate and he delivered a drive that felt like a return to who he is when the weekend bends his way.

Norris didn’t win, but he won the moment. Third keeps the gap healthy, even if the balance didn’t look like the benchmark he’s had for most of the season. Verstappen’s night was a reminder of how fragile his title push has become. Nothing dramatic. Just a slow slide out of range.

The fight hasn’t been decided. But the tone has. Piastri is back in it. Norris still holds the cards. Verstappen is down to his last opening. Sunday becomes a test of nerve more than pace.
