The XPEL Grand Prix at Road America 2026 arrives with a championship shape already forming. Road America has crowned champions. Ten times, the eventual champion has also won here. Alex Palou arrives in Elkhart Lake leading the 2026 NTT INDYCAR SERIES championship by 49 points, carrying four wins from nine races, and targeting a circuit where he has won three times already. This is not neutral ground. Road America is where Palou builds championships, and after the most dominant run of the 2026 season so far, he arrives at round 10 of 18 with the clearest path to the title of anyone in the field. Kyle Kirkwood sits 49 points back. David Malukas is 68 behind. The chasers are running out of weekends where they can afford to let Palou add to the gap.

The Championship Picture
The driver who went on to win the championship has also won at Road America ten times. Mario Andretti, Michael Andretti, Jacques Villeneuve, Alex Zanardi, Cristiano da Matta, Sebastien Bourdais, Scott Dixon, and Palou himself in 2021, 2023 and 2025. This circuit rewards the kind of precise, controlled race management that championship-winning drivers do better than almost anyone else. It suits Palou specifically.
He has four wins from nine races in 2026. St. Petersburg, Birmingham, Long Beach, Detroit. No other driver has more than two wins. Newgarden has two. Kirkwood, Lundgaard and Rosenqvist have one apiece. Palou is not running away with this championship quietly. He is doing it in front of everyone, at circuits across every format, and now he arrives at the one where his record is the strongest of anyone currently entered.
Kirkwood at 293 points is the closest challenger. He won Arlington earlier this season and has been consistently in the top five, but Long Beach did not go his way after leading the championship there in April. Malukas sits third at 274 in what is his debut season with Team Penske. Lundgaard fourth at 246. O’Ward fifth at 239. The gap between Palou and second place is not yet decisive with nine races remaining. But it is getting harder to close with every round Palou converts.
Palou at Road America
Three wins. 2021, 2023, 2025. The most victories at this circuit by any active driver. Chip Ganassi Racing have won five of the last seven IndyCar races here. That combination, driver and team, arriving together with a 49-point championship lead, is the context everyone else is working against this weekend.
His 2025 Road America win came from car 10 just as this one will. He led 24 laps last year on the way to a controlled victory. Across his Road America career he has led laps, managed tyres on a circuit that demands patience through the long, fast sections, and converted pace into results more consistently here than almost anyone on the current entry list. Road America is 4.014 miles of circuit where raw speed is necessary but not sufficient. The rhythm of the place, the patience through the infield, the precision on braking for Turn 1 and the Canada Corner hairpin, suits drivers who can manage a race as much as attack one.
Dixon is the only other active driver with multiple wins here, both in 2017 and 2020. Newgarden has won twice, in 2018 and 2022. Power has two wins, 2016 and 2024. All of them are entered this weekend. Palou fits that mould more than most.
The Chasers
Kirkwood needs a result. His Arlington win was the high point of the season. Since Long Beach the gap has grown. Road America is not a natural street circuit specialist’s track in the way that Long Beach or Detroit are. It is a permanent road course at high speed, and Kirkwood has led only four laps here across his career compared to Palou’s 24. The structural advantage sits elsewhere this weekend. That does not mean he cannot win.
Malukas at Team Penske has been one of the surprises of the 2026 season. Third in the championship in his debut year with the organisation is a real result. He has led two laps at Road America in his career, which is limited experience at the circuit. Penske have won here seven times in total, with Power taking 2024 and Newgarden taking 2022. The team know the circuit. Whether Malukas can convert that knowledge into a podium fight is the question for his weekend.
Newgarden is a two-time Road America winner, taking victory in 2018 and 2022, and his two wins this season at Phoenix and Madison show he is still a front-runner. Power won here in 2024 and leads all active drivers with 76 laps led at Road America across his career. He is 17th in the championship at 145 points. Road America is the circuit where his pace has historically reappeared regardless of where the season has placed him. Both Penske veterans have reason to believe this is their weekend even if neither is in the championship fight at the front.
Lundgaard won the Indianapolis Road Course race this season and has been consistently in the points. Arrow McLaren have three cars entered this weekend with O’Ward and Siegel alongside him. O’Ward has 43 laps led at Road America, giving him one of the stronger active records at the circuit, but 2026 still needs a race-winning result from the Arrow McLaren side of the garage. Rosenqvist, who won the Indianapolis 500, is eighth in the championship at 221 points and is a previous Road America winner from 2020.
The Rookies
Three Rookie of the Year candidates make their Road America NTT INDYCAR SERIES debut this weekend. Dennis Hauger leads the rookie standings at 133 points in the Dale Coyne Racing car. Caio Collet sits second at 99 points in the A.J. Foyt Enterprises entry. Collet won the INDY NXT race at Road America in 2025, which gives him some circuit knowledge heading into his first IndyCar start here. Mick Schumacher is third in the rookie standings at 89 points for Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing.
Road America rewards experience and reference points. All three rookies are starting from zero on a 4.014-mile circuit with no margin for error through the fast sections. Hauger’s championship lead in the rookie battle is earned across nine races of consistent performance. This weekend tests whether that consistency holds at one of the most demanding permanent road courses on the calendar.

Tyre Strategy
Six sets of Primary (Hard) and five sets of Alternate (Soft) are available across the full weekend. Teams fielding a rookie driver may use one additional set of primary tyres. The mandatory race requirement is simple: teams must use one set of Primary and one set of new Alternate for at least two laps each. That obligation shapes the pit window but does not restrict how aggressively teams choose to use their remaining allocation.
Road America typically produces a two-stop race. The circuit’s length means laps are long, which compresses the total lap count to 55 and concentrates the tyre strategy decision into a narrower window than shorter circuits. A safety car is what reshapes it. A full-course yellow at the right moment can pull forward the pit window, strand drivers on the wrong compound, and reset a race that had looked settled. Push-to-pass runs to 200 seconds of total deployment, maximum 20 seconds per activation. Hybrid energy is unlimited in activation frequency, capped at 600 kilojoules per lap.
Qualifying runs in three knockout rounds for the NTT P1 Award on Saturday at 1:05pm CT. The full 2026 IndyCar calendar is on Coffee Corner Motorsport. The grid for Sunday’s race is decided there. At Road America, track position off the start matters but the circuit’s long straights and defined braking zones give overtaking opportunities that tighter street circuits do not. Starting from the front is still the preference. It is not the only route to the win.

Coffee Corner Take
Road America has crowned champions before. Ten times, the eventual champion has also won here.
Palou is already building the case. Four wins, 49 points clear, arriving at his circuit. Three previous victories at a track that has delivered champions with a consistency no other round on the calendar can match. Chip Ganassi Racing have won five of the last seven IndyCar races here. The team, the circuit, the championship lead. Everything points the same way.
That does not make Sunday straightforward. Kirkwood needs to stop the run somewhere and 49 points with nine races left is not out of reach. Newgarden and Power have the circuit knowledge to threaten from wherever they qualify. Dixon always finds something here. Road America gives overtaking room that street circuits do not, which means the grid position matters less than the race management does. That is Palou’s ground.
Watch qualifying. Palou has the NTT P1 Award standings almost entirely to himself at 191 points. His pole pace has been as dominant as his race pace in 2026. If he takes pole here too, Sunday becomes about whether anyone in the field has an answer for a Chip Ganassi car that has been the class of this season on a circuit where CGR have won eight times in total.
Road America has formed part of ten championship seasons. Palou is trying to make 2026 number eleven.
