I should be in London this weekend. Covering the Formula E season finale from inside the paddock. Media accreditation came through. But I’m not there.
And I want to be honest about why.
I booked a family trip to Euro disney last year. It was a rare escape. Something to look forward to. We haven’t been away as a family since Covid so it was important to do this. Something just for us. As a full-time carer to four disabled children, these kinds of moments take serious planning. We don’t get many. When we do, they matter.
What I didn’t fully factor in was how much more it would cost to make it magical. Character dining. Accessible travel. Extra Help. A few small upgrades that made all the difference. I don’t regret a thing. But it left no room to jump straight into another major trip just days later.
At the same time, I’ve been working hard to renovate the garden at home. I levelled it out, laid new lawn (well almost its being delivered this weekend), and turned it into a safe space where the kids can enjoy the summer. Not glamorous, but highly important. Just like the holiday, it was a deliberate choice to invest in something real and lasting for them.
Then there’s the other side of running this platform. Media accreditation for events like this often comes through painfully late. Sometimes just a week or two before the race. That makes it almost impossible to plan anything affordably. You miss out on cheap train tickets and hotel deals, and end up facing inflated prices with no flexibility.
And the truth is, most channels like mine run at a loss. Every article, every video, every post comes with unseen costs. Software subscriptions. Editing tools. Hosting fees. Camera gear. Even apps just to get captions working properly. It all adds up. And the return? Small. Payments come in trickles, if at all. There’s no big backing. Very little brand deals. Just me, trying to tell good stories in motorsport while juggling real life.
So no, I’m not in the media centre this weekend. But I am still covering the race. There’ll be a full breakdown on the site. The title fight, the track action, the stories that matter. Because whether I’m on the ground or watching from home, I still care about doing this properly.
That said, I’m still trying to sneak in a last-minute trip to London on Sunday if the stars align. It’s a long shot, but I haven’t completely given up on being there for the final day.
This isn’t me stepping away from Formula E. Hopefully, access will come again. I’ll be back on site when the time is right. But this weekend, I made a different choice. I chose my family. I chose to build something at home. And I’m okay with that.
Thanks for sticking with me. And thank you for supporting independent motorsport media.
Terry
