Max Verstappen secured an incredible pole position for the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix amidst a dramatic end to Qualifying. The Dutchman narrowly edged out Oscar Piastri by a mere one-hundredth of a second, while Lando Norris suffered a significant crash early in Qualifying.
As the McLarens, having performed exceptionally well in the weekend’s practice sessions, entered the session as the favourites, the race for pole position intensified as Q3 commenced. Piastri initially secured the first time on the board, but Norris’s momentary oversteer sent him into the wall at the exit of Turn 5, prematurely ending his session and triggering a red flag.
When the action resumed, a thrilling battle for pole ensued. George Russell initially claimed the top spot before being overtaken by Piastri. However, Verstappen surged through on a lap of 1 minute and 27.294 seconds, narrowly defeating Piastri by just 0.010 seconds.
This result placed Russell in third position behind Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc in fourth and Kimi Antonelli in fifth. Carlos Sainz secured a solid sixth position, marking his best Qualifying performance for Williams to date.
Lewis Hamilton secured a seventh-place position as he continues to adapt to the Ferrari, while Yuki Tsunoda claimed an eighth-place position for Red Bull. Pierre Gasly maintained a commendable performance for Alpine in ninth place, and Norris remained in tenth position without a time on the board due to his early exit from Qualifying.
Alex Albon, the Williams driver, exited Q2 in 11th place, narrowly missing out by just 0.007 seconds. Liam Lawson, on the other hand, was disappointed to slip down to 12th place in the Racing Bulls.
Fernando Alonso’s qualifying session ended in 13th place, as he joined the elimination zone alongside Isack Hadjar of the Racing Bulls in 14th and Ollie Bearman of the Haas in 15th.
Lance Stroll and Jack Doohan, both drivers for Aston Martin, failed to qualify for Q2, finishing in 16th and 17th place respectively.
The session also witnessed a double elimination for Kick Sauber, as Nico Hulkenberg and Gabriel Bortoleto exited in 18th and 20th place, respectively. Bortoleto’s exit was particularly notable as he suffered a significant spin on his final lap. Esteban Ocon ended the day in 19th place for Haas.
