Rosenqvist Denies Palou in Portland IndyCar Qualifying as Malukas and Foyt Hit With Grid Penalties

9 August 2026

Felix Rosenqvist won Portland IndyCar qualifying by 0.0184 seconds over Alex Palou on Saturday, taking his second pole of 2026 and the eighth of his career in the No. 60 SiriusXM Honda, its livery saluting the Grateful Dead for the OnlyBulls Grand Prix of Portland weekend. Honda took the top four, five of the top six and ten of the first twelve spots through the knockout rounds. David Malukas qualified ninth in the No. 12 Verizon Team Penske Chevy but carries a six-position grid penalty into Sunday for an unapproved engine change at Nashville, one of two penalties confirmed on Friday alongside A.J. Foyt Enterprises’ No. 4 entry. Christian Lundgaard’s session ended early after a qualifying interference penalty cost him two fast laps and knocked him out in the first segment. The 110-lap race at Portland International Raceway starts at 4pm ET Sunday on FOX.

Rosenqvist Beats the Clock

Rosenqvist’s pole lap of 58.4828 seconds came with three seconds still left on the clock in a Firestone Fast Six session that never settled, his second pole of 2026 following Long Beach and the eighth of his IndyCar career. By his own account, the margins had stayed close all weekend, and the difference came down to execution rather than outright pace.

He wasn’t the only one chasing pole with barely a lap to spare. Rosenqvist said afterwards he’d misread his own margin over Palou on the timing screen, expecting three tenths and finding two hundredths instead. Qualifying by execution was how he put it: safe, clean laps in Q3 after using the earlier segments to test the limits of the car. It’s overdue for him at this circuit specifically. He’s been close at Portland repeatedly across his career without landing the pole until now.

Palou’s Nearly Perfect Lap

Palou’s 58.5012 stood as the target through most of the Fast Six before Rosenqvist beat it in the closing seconds. This is the second time this year he’s been edged out at the very end, after Long Beach.

Second still leaves Palou in a strong position. He leads Malukas by 83 points with six races remaining, a gap of more than a race, and starting ahead of both Malukas and Kirkwood gives him a clean getaway from the front row. He flagged how close the entire field has been all weekend, warning that qualifying pace this tight tends to produce strategy swings around laps 20 to 30, once saving fuel or tyres stops being an option with someone at identical pace waiting to pounce.

Honda Dominates Portland Qualifying

Honda-powered cars led all three knockout rounds and took ten of the first twelve qualifying spots. Rosenqvist, Palou, Power and Ericsson filled the top four before Rinus VeeKay’s Juncos Hollinger Racing Chevy broke the run in fifth, the fastest Chevy-powered lap of the session at 58.7701. Kyffin Simpson completed the Fast Six in sixth, his first appearance in the top segment this season.

Will Power qualified third at 58.5130 in the No. 26 TWG AI Honda, continuing a strong run at Portland since his move to Andretti Global. His teammate Marcus Ericsson followed in fourth at 58.6729, the same week he confirmed a contract renewal with the team for 2027.

Grid Penalties for Malukas and Foyt

INDYCAR Officiating confirmed six-position grid penalties on Friday for the No. 4 A.J. Foyt Enterprises entry and the No. 12 Team Penske entry, both for unapproved engine changes. The Foyt car, driven by rookie Caio Collet, was penalised for a change made following the Monday, 20 July race. The Penske car, driven by Malukas, made two unapproved engine changes across the Nashville Superspeedway weekend, triggering the penalty under Rule 16.1.6.2.1, which states the second unapproved change-out within an event is served at the following race. Road and street course events carry a six-position penalty under Rule 16.1.6.1.2, against nine at ovals, and Portland is where both entries serve it.

Malukas qualified ninth on merit at 58.8690, level with his season-long strength on ovals. Applying the penalty to Saturday’s timesheet puts him 15th on Sunday’s grid, a working figure rather than an official INDYCAR start sheet, but consistent with how the six-position drop applies against Friday’s confirmed order. Collet’s 18th-placed lap of 58.9054 shifts back to 24th on the same basis.

This one’s costly for Malukas specifically. He arrives at Portland second in the championship, 83 points behind Palou with six races to go, and starting six rows further back than his lap time earned him means far more traffic to clear through Turn 1’s festival chicane, where cars drop from around 175 mph on the front straight down to roughly 55 mph in first gear. Sunday’s race is considerably harder than it needed to be.

Christian Lundgaard’s penalty is separate and unrelated. He was handed a loss of two fast laps for qualifying interference in Segment 1/2 under Rule 8.3.7.1, ending his session 25th at 59.5423 without advancing out of the first round.

One Last Portland for Rosenqvist

Strategy has usually been simple for him at this circuit. Last year wasn’t, an early caution and a shared mistake with Pato O’Ward costing him a top ten finish after both pitted too soon. Clean air and a straightforward race are what he’s after this time, on a weekend he’s already flagged as one of the ones he wants to win before his three years at Meyer Shank Racing come to a close at Laguna Seca.

Coffee Corner Take

Two hundredths of a second decided this one, and Rosenqvist found it exactly when it mattered. He’s made a habit this year of finding the margin when qualifying comes down to the final lap.

This is his final Portland weekend with Meyer Shank Racing, on a circuit he’s called one of his favourites, in front of a crowd he still can’t fully explain his own connection to. He’s already said this is the team he wants to leave with one more win. Saturday put him in the best position possible to get it.

For Palou, the damage is minimal. Second by two hundredths still means the front row, still means starting ahead of the two drivers directly behind him in the standings, and an 83 point championship lead doesn’t get dented by a lost pole. But he said it himself: it hurts more when it’s that close.

Malukas is the one who takes the real hit. A six-place penalty like that doesn’t erase 83 points of championship gap on its own, but it strips away the one thing that was working in his favour this weekend: track position from a lap that was quick enough to matter. He now has to make that pace count from six rows further back, in traffic instead of clean air.
