Lights Out: Marquez 1-2 From the Front Row
Marc Marquez took pole earlier on Saturday with a 1:19.041 and converted it cleanly, holding the lead into Turn 1 ahead of his brother Alex. Ai Ogura made the fastest start of the front runners, moving up to third early on, but by the end of the opening lap Fabio Di Giannantonio had come through to take that position back. Further down the order, championship leader Jorge Martin was already on the move, up to sixth from his P8 grid slot, while Fabio Quartararo and Pedro Acosta went at it for eighth and ninth.
Marquez Builds a Cushion, Morbidelli Out
Franco Morbidelli crashed out after ten laps, his Sprint ending early. He was confirmed unhurt. At the front, the top three had been running close together before Marc Marquez began to find half a second on his brother, with Di Giannantonio a further six tenths back by the end of Lap 9 as the gap between the top three started to open up.
The Final Laps: 0.337 Seconds and Closing
It came back together at the end. With three and a half laps to go the gap between the Marquez brothers was down to 0.337 seconds. Di Giannantonio was closing too, all over the back of Alex Marquez with two laps left and setting up a final-lap attack on second place. None of it changed the result at the front. Marc Marquez crossed the line 0.368 seconds clear of his brother to make it back-to-back Sachsenring Sprint wins, with Di Giannantonio unable to find a way past and settling for third, 0.813 seconds behind.
Ogura finished fourth, 2.2 seconds behind third place, ending a run of two consecutive Sprint podiums. Raul Fernandez took fifth for SuperFile Trackhouse, with Martin sixth, his advantage over absent teammate Marco Bezzecchi now 11 points. Bagnaia was seventh, Acosta eighth ahead of Quartararo in ninth, and Diogo Moreira brought his Honda home in tenth, one place outside the points.
By the Numbers: MotoGP German Grand Prix 2026 Sprint
Marc Marquez now has 19 Sprint wins, the most of any rider in the class ahead of Jorge Martin on 18. His 35 Sprint podiums are also a record, ahead of Martin and Francesco Bagnaia on 34. A win at Sunday’s Grand Prix would be his tenth MotoGP victory at the Sachsenring, matching Hall of Famer Giacomo Agostini’s record for most wins at a single circuit, set at Imatra.
Alex Marquez’s second place made it the first Marquez 1-2 in a Sprint since Austria last year, and Ducati’s second Sprint 1-2-3 of 2026, following Spain. Di Giannantonio’s third was his fifth Sprint podium of the season, adding to Brazil, Catalunya, Italy and the Dutch TT, and he now targets a third Grand Prix win of his career on Sunday.

Martin leads on 197 points ahead of Sunday’s Grand Prix. Bezzecchi’s collarbone injury leaves him unable to score anywhere this weekend, holding him on 186. Di Giannantonio sits third on 184, two points off Bezzecchi and 13 off Martin. Marc Marquez, despite Saturday’s win, is fifth on 165, 32 points off the top.

Marc Marquez led every lap and Alex still took 0.337 seconds out of him inside the final three and a half laps. Marc had the answer, crossing the line 0.368 seconds clear. Di Giannantonio was on the back of Alex with two laps left and couldn’t find a way through either. On a track Marc has now won nine times at Grand Prix level, that’s still a Sprint he had to fight for.
Di Giannantonio gained the most out of the weekend so far. Third place is his fifth Sprint podium of 2026, and it puts him 13 points off Martin and just two behind Bezzecchi in second. He’s the rider whose championship position moved most on Saturday.
Bezzecchi’s collarbone injury rules him out of the whole German Grand Prix weekend, handing Martin an 11-point lead over a rival who can’t respond this weekend. Marc Marquez goes into Sunday chasing a tenth Sachsenring win that would match Agostini’s record at a single circuit. Ogura, off the back of his maiden win in the Netherlands, is chasing a first for Japanese riders: back-to-back MotoGP wins.
