Formula E GEN4 electric race car 2025 launch photographed in studio, built for Season 13 with active all-wheel drive and 600kW power

Formula E GEN4: FIA and Formula E unveil their most advanced and powerful race car yet

5 November 2025 · 13:56 GMT

Formula E just changed shape. The FIA and Formula E have taken the covers off the Formula E GEN4, the most powerful, efficient, and sustainable car ever built for the championship.
Six hundred kilowatts of power. Active all-wheel drive. Nearly total energy recovery. It’s not just an upgrade. It’s a reinvention of how electric cars race. The GEN4 will debut in Season 13, pushing the boundaries of performance and responsibility all at once.

Key Points

  • 50% more power than GEN3 Evo
  • 600kW peak output, over 815 horsepower
  • Active all-wheel drive and 700kW regenerative braking
  • 100% recyclable construction, 20% recycled content baseline
  • Manufacturer testing with Porsche, Nissan, Stellantis, Jaguar and Lola Cars

A new era for Formula E

Formula E called it the most advanced car in its history. And that’s not marketing talk.
The GEN4 is faster by design, tougher to master, and sharper in how it delivers every watt of power.

Active all-wheel drive lets the car send torque to each wheel on demand, whether it’s under braking, rotation or exit. It’s designed to be aggressive. Drivers will need to work harder, think faster, and manage more energy than ever before.

Six hundred kilowatts in full attack mode makes it the fastest Formula E car yet. With 700kW of regenerative braking, it can recover up to 40% of the energy it uses in a race.

The sustainable frontier

Speed isn’t the headline here. Sustainability is.
GEN4’s construction is 100% recyclable, with every major component sourced for circular use. At least 20% of its build uses recycled materials, and even the tyre compounds are chosen for recovery and reuse.

Formula E says the car achieves near-perfect motor efficiency, making it the most sustainable race car on the planet.
No shortcuts. No greenwashing. Just engineering that finally backs the sport’s message.

Manufacturers take charge

Development is already underway with Porsche, Nissan, Stellantis, Jaguar and Lola Cars. Each will bring its own powertrain systems, energy management and software strategies to extract every drop of performance from the new platform.

Vincent Gaillardot, FIA Technical Manager, said the car will sit at the sharp end of the FIA’s single-seater pyramid, calling it one of the highest-performing race cars anywhere in the world.

Two aerodynamic setups will let teams switch between high downforce for qualifying and low downforce for racing. It’s a first for Formula E, and it’ll add a new layer of tactical risk.

Fact Sheet: Inside the Formula E GEN4

A new era of motorsport is on the way. The all-new Formula E GEN4 car will make its debut in the 2026/27 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship season. Here’s what defines it.

Power and Performance

GEN4 turns the dial up again.
It delivers 450kW peak race power with a surge to 600kW in Attack Mode, making it the most powerful Formula E car yet. Regeneration climbs to 700kW, recovering more energy per lap than any previous model.

A 43% increase in race energy capacity brings total storage to 55kWh, giving drivers more freedom to fight and strategists more options to play with. The result is longer stints, higher speeds, and racing that stays closer for longer.

Active All-Wheel Drive

The revolution comes underneath. GEN4 becomes the world’s first open-wheel race car to feature active all-wheel drive for an entire race. Not just in Attack Mode or qualifying, but all the time.

It means total traction, instant response, and a new level of control at the limit. To match that, drivers now have unlimited traction control and anti-lock braking, allowing them to carry more speed and confidence into every corner.

Design and Aerodynamics

The look matches the intent.
GEN4 brings a more aggressive profile, wider stance, and modular bodywork. Teams will run two aerodynamic configurations — high downforce for qualifying, low downforce for racing — giving each the flexibility to shape their own strategy.

Every surface has been designed to reduce drag, improve cooling, and handle the extra power. The result is a car that’s as sharp in the mirrors as it is in the data.

Built for Total Sustainability

GEN4 doesn’t just lead in performance. It leads in purpose.
The chassis and body are 100% recyclable, built with at least 20% recycled content, double the GEN3 Evo baseline. Tyres and composite parts are engineered for reuse or recycling after each event.

It stands as the most sustainable race car in the world’s most sustainable motorsport. A complete package of performance and conscience, built to prove that innovation and responsibility can coexist at full speed.

Coffee Corner Take – Formula E GEN4

GEN4 is what Formula E has been chasing since day one. Relevance.
A car that proves electric racing can be fast, brutal, and uncompromising.

It looks like a leap because it is one.
More power, more regen, more nerve. Six hundred kilowatts waiting to be unleashed. Instant torque fighting traction. Active all-wheel drive alive under braking and exit. This isn’t just a new generation. It’s a whole new animal.

The GEN3 Evo reminded everyone what Formula E could be. Tight packs. Contact. Real fights. GEN4 feels like the moment it all clicks. The tech finally matches the chaos. Twenty-two cars, four driven wheels, and no room left to hide.

If it delivers, Season 13 won’t just move the goalposts. It’ll tear them out of the ground. Formula E will stop asking to be taken seriously and start setting the pace for the rest of motorsport.
