Race Recap: F2 Montreal Feature Race 2026

The Start: Tsolov Takes the Lead, Van Hoepen Fights Back

Van Hoepen started from pole but Tsolov went around the outside into Turn 1 to take the lead immediately. The Dutch driver fought back, powering through on the run to Turn 3 to retake the front. Villagómez was on the move early, gaining three places on the opening lap and adding a fourth with a DRS pass on Bennett into the final chicane on Lap 2.

On Lap 4 Câmara dived inside Minì into Turn 1 to take seventh. The race leader Van Hoepen was under pressure from Tsolov down the back straight. He defended into the final corners but a snap of oversteer on exit sent him into the Wall of Champions on Lap 5. Van Hoepen was out. Safety car deployed.

First Restart: Fittipaldi Spins, Safety Car Returns

Racing resumed on Lap 7 with Tsolov leading. Fittipaldi had taken the opportunity to pit at the restart but spun off at pit exit with no tyre temperature in the rubber. Safety car out for the second time immediately. The second neutralisation brought the entire field in for mandatory stops, handing the lead to Bilinski, who along with Herta, Maini and Boya had stayed out. Tsolov emerged from his stop ahead of Stenshorne and Villagómez, but contact between Villagómez and Bennett at the TRIDENT pit box ended Bennett’s afternoon.

Mid-Race: Stenshorne Climbs, Tsolov Spins

Racing resumed on Lap 13. Bilinski led the field ahead of Herta, Maini and Boya. Tsolov was fifth. Stenshorne was hunting.

Tsolov attempted an immediate move on Boya at Turn 1 on the restart but Boya ran him wide. Stenshorne came through to take fourth. On Lap 14 Stenshorne dived inside Maini at Turn 10 to take third. Tsolov followed but made contact with Maini at the final chicane and spun down the order. The championship contender had cost himself crucial positions at the worst possible moment.

Stenshorne kept moving. He took second from Herta into the final chicane on Lap 16. Câmara made a move on Villagómez at Turn 1 for fourth, contact at Turn 2 ended the Van Amersfoort driver’s race and brought out the VSC. When it cleared on Lap 18, Câmara was immediately under pressure from Beganovic, who got through after Câmara ran across the chicane. Bilinski led from Stenshorne, but a lock-up at Turn 10 on Lap 19 handed the lead to Stenshorne. Herta followed through for second. Beganovic passed his own teammate into Turn 1 and then cleared Herta on the run to Turn 12 on Lap 20.

Late Race: Dunne Emerges, Beganovic Retires, Safety Car Ends It

Câmara had been chasing Bilinski for fourth but contact at Turn 2 left the Invicta driver spinning to last. Bilinski lost fourth to Minì and Dunne on Lap 24. Dunne attempted to take third from Minì with a wide entry at Turn 10 but Minì used DRS to retake the position. On Lap 26 Dunne got his move done, using DRS through the final chicane to take third. The two Rodins were now first and third with Minì sandwiched between them.

Beganovic’s charge ended on Lap 27 when he pulled to the side of the road with a technical issue. His car needed clearing and the safety car came out for the third time. Racing resumed entering Lap 34 with Stenshorne leading Dunne and Minì. Maini had not yet pitted, with Duerksen and Tsolov quickly moving past him as the race entered its final phase. Goethe then made contact with Miyata, leaving the Hitech driver in the barriers. The safety car came out one final time and ran to the end, Stenshorne taking victory under neutralisation.

Coffee Corner Take

Stenshorne had a podium in the Sprint and a win in the Feature Race. Across both days in Montreal he was the most consistent driver in the field. The maiden win came under a safety car finish, which takes nothing away from what he built across the afternoon. He led from Lap 19 and nobody was getting near him before the final neutralisation made the result official. Rodin have a one-two in the Feature Race and a driver who looks increasingly capable of making this a proper championship fight.

Minì did exactly what a championship leader needs to do in a race that does not go to plan. Third place, points banked, lead extended. He arrived in Montreal with a six-point gap and leaves with a ten-point cushion. Minì still does not look dominant, but he keeps leaving weekends with the points he needs.

Tsolov’s weekend was a story of self-inflicted damage again. A penalty in the Sprint, a spin in the Feature Race after contact at the final chicane, and a fourth-place finish that should have been more. He is second in the championship but the gap to Minì has grown at both Montreal races. The speed is obvious. Right now though, the mistakes are proving expensive.

Dunne’s second place is the result that changes his season. He had been collecting penalties and grid drops across Montreal’s sprint weekend. A clean Feature Race drive to second, including a well-timed move on Minì that stuck, felt like the first properly controlled weekend he has put together in a while. Monaco is next and Circuit de Monaco will sort the drivers from the rest very quickly.

Câmara leaves Montreal with nothing from the Feature Race after two separate collision incidents. He is third in the championship but has not scored in the Feature Race across two rounds now. That is a pattern that needs addressing before Monaco.
