Fernando Alonso led FP1 and Oscar Piastri topped FP2 in a dramatic start to the 2025 F1 Singapore Grand Prix. Ferrari hit trouble, Red Bull stayed close, and the Marina Bay Circuit punished mistakes on a busy Friday.

Ferrari and McLaren split the day in Singapore. Alonso lit up the daylight running. Piastri delivered under the floodlights. Two very different sessions.
FP1: Alonso sets the benchmark
Fernando Alonso delivered for Aston Martin in the opening session with a 1:31.116. Leclerc came close, Verstappen stayed in range, and McLaren looked unsettled.
Albon’s day ends early
Alex Albon managed just two laps before smoke filled his helmet. A brake fire forced him to stop in the pit lane, his mechanics tackling flames with extinguishers. A nightmare start for Williams, leaving him far behind on mileage.
Track conditions tricky
The Marina Bay surface was dusty and slick. Lock-ups came early and often. Humidity sat at 72% with track temperatures around 35°C. Drivers complained of understeer and poor traction, sliding through the slower sections.
Leclerc strikes on softs
Ferrari bolted on the C5s midway through. Leclerc delivered a 1:31.266, four tenths clear of Norris at the time. For a while, Ferrari looked in control of the order.
Norris unsettled
Norris clipped the wall and struggled with balance. He had topped the sheet briefly on hards, but slipped back as others improved. By the flag, he was half a second off Alonso and two tenths behind his team-mate.
Hamilton ragged, Piastri close
Lewis Hamilton’s first soft run was aborted. His next lap was better, putting him fourth, just 0.001s quicker than Piastri. Both brushed the walls but got away with it.

The Day Flips
The morning pointed to Alonso control. Ferrari close, Verstappen steady, McLaren ragged.
The evening flipped it. Red flags, pit lane contact, Ferrari stumbling, and McLaren back on top.
FP2: Piastri tops the chaos
Oscar Piastri headed a messy second session with 1:30.714. The Australian survived two red flags, a pit lane clash, and Ferrari drama.
Early running
Antonelli set the first markers for Mercedes. Norris then led with 1:32.226. Piastri replied with 1:31.716, his team-mate just 0.007s back. Hamilton shadowed in fourth on mediums.
Russell crashes at Turn 16
George Russell lost the rear into Turn 16 and smashed his front wing. He limped back but took no further part, leaving Mercedes without useful evening data.
Lawson hits the wall
Minutes later, Liam Lawson clipped the barriers at Turn 17. His front-right broke, the carcass tore free, and sparks flew as he tried to limp home. He parked at pit entry. Red flag number two.
Pit lane collision
On the restart, Ferrari released Leclerc alongside Norris. The two touched, Norris nudged the wall, and had to be wheeled back for a new nose. The stewards confirmed Ferrari face an unsafe release investigation.
Verstappen, Alonso, then Piastri
As conditions improved, Verstappen went top with 1:30.857. Alonso chased him with 1:30.877. But Piastri struck late on used softs, reclaiming P1 with 1:30.714.
Hadjar impressed again, splitting the leaders with second, just 0.132s down. Norris trailed in fifth, nearly half a second off his team-mate.
Ferrari unravel
Ferrari’s session collapsed. Leclerc’s run was broken by the pit incident. Hamilton brushed the wall late on. They ended ninth and tenth, well off the leaders.
Midfield movers
Stroll kept Aston Martin in the mix with sixth. Ocon shone again for Haas in seventh. Sainz took eighth for Williams, strong again after his podium in Monza. Albon recovered mileage with 13th. Sauber sat lower midfield, Alpine stayed rooted to the back.

Coffee Corner Take
Two sessions. Two leaders. Alonso carried Aston Martin in the heat. Piastri carried McLaren at night.
Norris looked ragged, Ferrari burned laps they badly needed, and Red Bull stayed close. Alonso’s pace across both sessions looked real, not a headline grab.
Singapore already punished mistakes. Plenty have paid the price before qualifying has even begun.
