The dawn of Formula 1’s next generation officially now has a date. In fact, 24 of them, to be precise. With the release of the long-awaited 2026 Formula 1 World Championship and FIA Formula 2 Championship calendars, the sport is setting the stage not just for a packed schedule โ€” but a generational shift in how racing looks, sounds, and sustains itself.

Both championships kick off in Melbourne from 6โ€“8 March once more in 2026, with the normal season opener Bahrain featuring later on as they have done this year due to Ramadan. Beyond that shared launch point, though, the two series will travel through five continents, balancing freight logistics, sustainability goals, and racing spectacle in a season that blends the familiar with the futuristic and also includes some farewells.

F1: Madrid Joins the Party, Sustainable Tech Takes the Lead

The 2026 F1 season promises more than just travel and trophies โ€” it marks the competitive debut of radically new regulations. With advanced 100% sustainable fuels, tighter aerodynamic rules, and new power unit designed for electric deployment and cost control, this calendar is more than just a roadmap โ€” it’s a reset.

Madrid headlines the changes. Slated for 11โ€“13 September (pending circuit homologation), the Spanish capital will host its first Grand Prix since 1981, racing alongside Barcelona as Spain’s second race in 2026 before we say goodbye to Barcelona in 2027. It’s a move toward urban expansion, mirroring the global trend of destination street circuits for Formula One Management.

Also notable is the calendar’s improved logistics. For example, Canada now follows Miami in May, creating a more efficient North American swing. Meanwhile, a consolidated summer of European racing will stretch from Monaco in early June through to Madrid, delivering a classic mid-season heartland. The result will also see Monaco no longer clash with the Indy 500, although the new schedule does still leave an Indy 500 clash just now with Canada, much to McLaren boss Zak Brown’s delight.

The Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort also drops off after 2026, following a high-profile return in 2021 that revived the Oranje army’s party. For now, 2026 marks its last dance โ€” a race that may carry more emotional weight than ever, especially for four-time and current driver Champion Max Verstappen.

The finale?

That now familiar triple header: Las Vegas (once again a Saturday night race), Qatar, and Abu Dhabi โ€” wrapping up in the desert twilight as we have become used to on 6 December.

“2026 will be a new era for Formula 1… a brand-new set of regulations, 100% sustainable fuel, and exciting new venues,” said F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali. “We welcome Madrid to the calendar and automotive giants like Audi, Cadillac and Ford to the grid.”

FI” President Mohammed Ben Sulayem added:

“A new race, new teams, new manufacturers โ€” all ushering in a fresh era. This calendar reflects a global sport becoming more efficient and sustainable.”

F2: A Tighter Grid and a Tenth Anniversary with Purpose

FIA Formula 2 and the FIA have announced the calendar for the 2026 FIA Formula 2 Championship, and once again, the season will comprise a total of 14 rounds, all of which are support events of the FIA Formula One World Championship.

The 11 teams and 22 drivers will contest a total of 28 races across 13 countries, with a new venue added to the calendar as Formula 2 goes to Madrid for the very first time (subject to FIA circuit homologation).

The European leg will once again serve as the beating heart of the season, with Monaco, Barcelona, Austria, Silverstone, Spa, and Budapest creating a relentless midseason run. As in F1, the campaign opens in Melbourne and closes in Abu Dhabi, with only one non-European race between September and the finale: Baku, where F2’s street-racing credentials shine.

“Four F2 drivers stepped up to F1 in 2025 โ€” proof that the system works,” said Domenicali. “This calendar gives drivers a showcase on the world’s biggest stages.”

F2″CEO Bruno Michel emphasised cost-efficiency, adding:

โ€œI’m pleased to announce our calendar for the 2026 season. F2 is the ultimate preparation for Formula 1, as proven by the strong performance of the drivers who have joined the F1 grid in 2025.

Racing on Formula 1 tracks and in front of the F1 paddock is absolutely key. Next season, we remain with 14 rounds in total, all supporting events of F1. As announced previously, we are adding a new venue with Madrid, which should be an exciting new track for our drivers and teams.

โ€œAs always, we have designed this calendar with the costs in mind to ensure that the team’s budget remains at a healthy level.โ€

Final thoughts

As Formula 1 prepares for its next phase โ€” one driven by sustainability, cost-conscious innovation, and fresh team dynamics we can’t help but wonder about the future of historic tracks as Imola bows out and two more bid farewell in 2026 โ€” The F2 supporting series remains perfectly aligned with the main event. The road to F1 is as competitive as ever, and the world stage is set for the biggest regulation change the sport has seen in years, but is F1 doing enough to protect the heritage of the sport with the shift in locations? Whilst the shareholders will be delighted, some of the fans seeing favourites disappear will no doubt not be sharing that same delight.
