In a race that delivered strategy shocks, last-lap lunges, and a podium debut, Richard Verschoor reminded the Formula 2 paddock why he’s one of the grid’s most experienced tacticians. The MP Motorsport driver carved through the field on fresh Softs to seize victory in the Barcelona Sprint Race, holding off championship leader Alexander Dunne in a dramatic late charge. 🇳🇱🔥

But the win wasn’t just about rubber and timing — it was a comeback built on calm decision-making after a tough start and early contact.

🔁 From Stall to Sprint Star

Verschoor’s day looked all but over at lights out. A stall off the line left him tumbling down the order, compounded by contact with Rodin’s Arvid Lindblad that sent the Briton spinning and Verschoor scrambling. But a mid-race Safety Car threw him a lifeline — and he took it with both hands.

By diving into the pits on Lap 18 for a set of Softs — along with Dunne, Montoya, Martins and more — Verschoor reset the script. Rejoining in 10th with just six laps to go, the Dutchman immediately began carving through rivals with surgical precision.

⚔️ Dunne Fights to the Flag

Rodin rookie Alexander Dunne was equally relentless. Restarting behind Verschoor, the Irishman matched his every move — and then some — setting the race’s fastest lap on Lap 25 (1:29.506) and nearly nabbing the win in the final corners. His P2 finish not only reaffirmed his standout rookie form but also lifted him back into the lead of the Drivers’ Championship on 76 points.

🥉 Villagómez: From P22 to Podium

Perhaps the biggest shock of all was Rafael Villagómez. The Van Amersfoort Racing driver started in 22nd — yet a masterstroke strategy and brave overtakes saw him finish third, securing his maiden F2 podium. Notably, his move on Jak Crawford around the outside of Turn 13 was the kind of late-race bravery that defines rising stars. 🇲🇽👏

🌀 Race Recap: Slipstream, Spin, and Strategy

The opening laps delivered a classic Barcelona shuffle — Luke Browning snatched the early lead from Fornaroli and Duerksen, but it was Jak Crawford who took charge by Lap 4. With the field bunched in DRS range and tyre degradation looming, Crawford built a slender gap… until chaos unfolded behind him.

  • 🔁 PREMA’s Montoya and Minì collided at Turn 1, triggering a Safety Car.
  • 🚨 A mass pit stop followed, reshuffling the order and setting the stage for Verschoor and Dunne’s charge.
  • 🎯 By Lap 24, Verschoor launched past Browning and Crawford to take the lead — Dunne followed him through moments later.

Behind the front trio, Victor Martins made his Softs work to finish sixth, while Sebastián Montoya clawed back to fifth despite earlier drama.

🧮 The Standings: Tight at the Top

  • 🥇 Alexander Dunne – 76 pts
  • 🥈 Luke Browning – 72 pts
  • 🥉 Richard Verschoor – 69 pts
  • 🔢 Fornaroli (65) and Crawford (61) round out the top five

In the Teams’ standings, Hitech TGR leads with 101 points, with Campos (92), MP Motorsport (81), Rodin (78), and Invicta (77) close behind. This title fight is far from settled. 📊

🗣️ Verschoor: “Absolutely crazy”

“I hope you didn’t miss this F2 race because it was absolutely crazy. I stalled at the start and had contact as well and damage, so the race was more or less over. But then the Safety Car happened, and we did an insane race to win. So really happy and looking forward to tomorrow.” — Richard Verschoor
